Guanacaste Costa Rica

March 2011

March 2010

For the sixth consecutive year a CVC team of professionals travelled to Guanacaste province in Costa Rica to provide needed vision care to school children and adults in the region. We wish to thank our local partners Peninsula Papagayo Community Relations and CATSA for their continued support and organization of this project.

The team members from Canada were Drs. Peter McGuigan, Bob Erlandson, Paul Geneau, Barry Thienes and Allan Jones along with Costa Rican optometrists Dr. Fabio Mora and Dr. Laura Barrentes; without whose help this project would not be possible.
During the week of March 8, 2010 the team worked in the communities of El Coco, Sardinal, Paso Tempisque, Palmira, the CATSA plant and Comunidad. We were able to examine 1239 children, adults and seniors during this time. The team prescribed 161 glasses which will be fabricated by a generous donation by a local Costa Rican optical company and we also dispensed 193 reading glasses to those in need. In addition medication was provided to over 150 patients.
As in the past we thank those in Canada who continually support the efforts of CVC and to our local partners, CATSA, Peninsula Papagayo, and Drs. Mora and Barrentes who without their organization, funding and dedication to the children and adults of the region this project would not happen.
We look forward to returning to Costa Rica in 2011.
Respectfully submitted
Peter J. McGuigan O.D.
